Vietnamese ICT companies are looking for Finnish partners

(News from Finland Embassy in Hanoi)

Nearly 20 prominent Vietnamese software and ICT sector companies visited Finland at the end of October in order to get a better understanding of the ICT sector in Finland as well as start cooperation with Finnish companies.

Business meetings between Finnish and Vietnamese companiesAfter the seminar in Turku, the participants had a chance to have one-to-one business discussions

The visit included two seminars, one in Helsinki on 27 October and one in Turku on 30 October on the business opportunities of the ICT sectors in Vietnam and Finland. The seminars provided comprehensive information on the two countries' joint interests in the ICT sector. Right after the seminars, one-to-one business meetings between Finnish and Vietnamese companies provided a perfect time to test the learned things in practise and sound out the true mutual interest for cooperation. At least the initial results proved to be good since lots of promising business cooperation ideas were initiated - not to speak about many more ideas that are surely still to come. The business negotiations will be continued in the coming months between the contacts made in the seminars, and during the whole week.

The delegates visited, among others, one of Nokia's main offices in Espoo, University of Technology in Otaniemi, Finnish Broadcasting Company YLE, Finnish Funding Agency for Technology and Innovations (TEKES), and a joint ICT house of the universities and other higher education institutes in Turku. All in all, these visits provided the Vietnamese business people a broad picture of the successes and strengths of the Finnish innovation policy, information society and ICT related higher education and gave a better idea on different cooperation possibilities.

ICT is one of the fastest growing economic sectors in Vietnam. At the same time, Vietnam is the third fastest growing market for telecommunications in Asia and the second most interesting country for outsorcing software development, just behind India. Because of these facts and other recent successes of the Vietnamese economy, the country is often being referred to as a "little China" or the "Southeast Asian tiger". International and well-known companies such as IBM, Intel, Microsoft, and Oracle have already found Vietnam. Will the Finnish companies take their chance and follow the same path?

Siv Ahlberg from FinnpartnershipSiv Ahlberg briefed the seminar participants on some funding possibilities of the Finnpartnership programme

The Embassy of Finland in Hanoi helped in organising and financing the trip as part of its activities which are targeted to support capacity-building of the private sector in Vietnam and enhance Finnish-Vietnamese business partnerships. Other key organisers responsible for the programme and seminars in Finland were Finnish Information Society Development Centre (TIEKE) , TE centre in Turku region, Finnpartnership business partnerships programme, and Finpro.
